We are due to cover a lot of Topics for the Autumn Term.

History: The Anglo Saxons and the Scotts.

Anglo-Saxons: facts for kids | National Geographic Kids

During this topic we will learn about the Roman withdrawal from Britain in c. AD 410 and the fall of the western Roman Empire. We will explore the Scots invasions from Ireland to North Britain (Scotland) as well as Anglo Saxon invasions, settlements and kingdoms, exploring place names and village life. We will also explore art and culture from Anglo-Saxon times as well as the Christian conversion – Canterbury, Iona and Lindisfarne

Science: Rocks and Soils.

                                                                       Rocks & Soils Pack

In the ‘Rocks and Soil’ topic, Year 3 and 4 pupils will explore the fascinating world beneath their feet. They’ll learn to identify and compare different types of rocks based on their properties, investigate how fossils are formed, and understand how soil is created and why it’s important. Through hands-on experiments and observations, children will develop their scientific enquiry skills while discovering how rocks and soils play a vital role in our natural environment.

Geography: We will explore the topic of 'All around the world. '

Around the World Display Lettering | Geography Display

We will explore how to use atlases and learn about time zones, longitude and latitude. We will look at the name and location of counties and cities of the United Kingdom, geographical regions and their identifying human and physical characteristics, key topographical features (including hills, mountains, coasts and rivers), and land-use patterns; and understand how some of these aspects have changed over time. We will also investigate types of settlement and land use, economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals and water.

Design Technology: Boats.

Sutton Hoo: Anglo-Saxon replica ship project to start - BBC News

We will be designing and making Anglo Saxon boats. We will explore different tools and techniques to join materials and research features of Anglo Saxon boats before designing and making our own boats. We will then reflect on our models and make improvements.

Expectations

Reading

At Tansley Primary School, we expect children to read to an adult at least 4 times a week - please record when you have read with your child in their reading record; this can be any book they have read, whether it is a school reading book, one from the library or one of their own from home. Please make sure your child brings in their reading record daily.

Spellings

This year we will continue using Spelling Shed to help the children learn their spellings in an exciting way. Weekly spelling tests will take place on Friday mornings, which is when your child will also receive their new spellings. A paper copy will be stuck into the children's reading records which can be used to practice their spellings however, we ask that children play two games on Spelling Shed per week. Children have a Spelling Shed login (in the back of their reading record) where they can practise their spellings through games. A parent guide of how to log in and use Spelling Shed is available here: Parent Guide for Spelling Shed

Times Tables

Children should also access both Times Table Rockstars and Numberbots for a minimum of 15 minutes each per week to practice their times tables (their login details can be found in the back of their reading records). A weekly times table check is completed in class every Friday, in which the children have 5 minutes to answer 40 questions on the times table that they have been set. Having secure times tables knowledge is key as it assists children's fluency in all areas of mathematics as they progress through Key Stage 2. By the end of Year 3, children are expected to know their 10, 2, 5, 3, 4 & 8 times tables. By the end of Year 4 children are expected to know all of their times tables to 12 and answer each question in 6 seconds or less.

Tuesday afternoon - PE/Forest School/Curriculum Enrichment

Week 1 - Forest School
Week 2 - P.E.
Week 3 - Curriculum Enrichment
Week 4 - P.E

P.E

Children will be having their P.E. lesson on a Tuesday afternoon and will need to come to school in their P.E kit on this day. P.E kit is trainers, black shorts or joggers (depending on the weather) and a red shirt (no football shirts or hoodies). Children should bring a red/ black jumper if needed. Jewellery will need to be removed for health and safety reasons, so it is better if removed at home. If not, it must be covered by medical tape by the child or before coming to school.

Forest School

Children come to school in layers of comfortable clothing  (rules concerning jewellery as P.E) a coat and waterproof where possible, including footwear.

Curriculum Enrichment

Children attend in school uniform

Remember to be prepared for the weather at various times of year.  Remember hats and gloves in the cold weather and sun hats and sun-cream in the summer. Any which way, children should always have a COAT.

Water bottles need to be named, non-breakable, not leak, and be filled with water.

Year 4 children will be sitting the Statutory Multiplication Check in the Summer term - more information is available in the Summer term tab. information to follow.
